WHY LIVE SCAN? Applicants for employment, licenses, certifications and volunteers at schools and nonprofit organizations are often required to have their fingerprints recorded and reviewed by the California Department of Justice (DOJ) and the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) to determine an applicant's suitability. As of July, 2005 all fingerprint submissions to the DOJ and FBI must be in a live scan format. Ink cards are no longer accepted.
Advantage Identification Services of Rocklin was the first company, outside of law enforcement, to provide Live Scan fingerprinting in Placer County. AIS personnel have a law enforcement background and are certified and authorized by the California Department of Justice (DOJ) and the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) to provide Live Scan fingerprinting services to the general public in the State of California.

Using an inkless technology, Live Scan allows digitally scanned fingerprints to be electronically submitted to the Department of Justice in a matter of minutes. The true identity of an individual can be established through the submission of fingerprints. Live Scan technology replaces the manual process of recording an individual's fingerprint patterns using an inkless electronic process. Live Scan digitizes the fingerprint minutiae's (the
characteristics that make fingerprints unique) and enables the electronic transfer of the fingerprints and personal data to the Department of Justice in a matter of seconds.

Once the Department of Justice receives the fingerprints and data, the Automated Fingerprint Identification System (AFIS) and National Transaction Management System (NATMS) electronically process the information. Most Live Scan transmissions are processed automatically and are responded to electronically within 72 hours. Live Scan transmissions requiring analysis of a
criminal record are forwarded to the Department of Justice's Applicant Response Unit for analysis and dissemination to the applicant's employer or requesting agency.
